Family Initiative launches first of its kind inclusive sports program to empower children with autism in Southwest Florida
CAPE CORAL, Fla. (Feb.1 2025) – Family Initiative, Southwest Florida’s leading organization dedicated to supporting children, adolescents, and young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), launched its first pilot sports program, FI Champs.
By “exploring creativity through movement,” coaches teach children the importance of staying active.
Whether they’re doing warm-ups, shooting hoops, or practicing drills, children and staff have a blast while learning valuable skills through physical interaction.

This new program aims to inspire a passion for sports and movement in children with ASD.
Beginning on Feb. 3, Family Initiative will offer FI Champs every Monday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
FI Champs provides a safe and encouraging environment where children can unleash their potential and try new things.
“As the regional leader in providing autism support services here in Southwest Florida, we are thrilled to add another impactful community-based program for children,” said President of Family Initiative David Brown.
Based at Family Initiative’s Thrive Academy, coaches guide children through interactive warm-ups. They introduce children to different sports while building confidence and relationships.
“Our sports program is designed to provide a structured environment where coaches focus on fostering growth, encouraging learning, and making physical activity enjoyable for all participants,” said Kate Barker, Program Manager. Stemming from Family Initiative’s original program FI Creates, FI Champs was formed after our children showed the need for an inclusive sports program.
FI Champs is the seventh program created by Family Initiative. Each one teaches children, teens, or young adults’ valuable skills to support their overall growth and development.
